DOT Celebrates National Tourism Week 2020
The Department of Tourism, Cagayan Valley and Northern Philippine Islands Region celebrated this years National Tourism Week with the theme, “Tourism and Rural Development” last September 21-27.
To address the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, all activities were streamed live over the region’s Facebook page.
The opening of the tourism week started with a Eucharistic Celebration at the DOT-Regional Office. The said eucharistic celebration was also aired live to involve the tourism officers, stakeholders and the general public from far and wide. A musical performance by a band was also livestreamed to jumpstart the weeklong events.
The National Tourism Week is celebrated every last week of September by virtue of Proclamation No. 894 signed on October 3, 1996, by then President Fidel Ramos. The celebration coincides with the annual observance of September 27 as World Tourism Day, declared by the United Nations World Tourism Organization and Proclamation No.1942 signed in 1980.
The weeklong celebration was also made relevant by the various contested activities which include photography contest, jingle contest, vlogging contest and the photo liking contest.
The various contested events were judged on 25 September, Friday. The panel of judges include the Instructional Media Center Coordinator of the Cagayan State University-Carig Campus, Mr. Peter Paul Valdepenas, the Officer In-Charge of the Philippine Information Agency, Ms. Angely Mercado, and the Vice-Chairperson of the Regional Development Council, the Chairperson of the Private Representative for Tourism and the former Regional Director of DOT, Dr. Blessida Diwa.
